July 24, 2024 - Additional information regarding the implementation of Multi-Factor Authentication (Students and Alumni)

Body

Dear Trinity Western University Students and Alumni,

As announced on July 8, we are implementing multi-factor authentication (also known as MFA or 2FA) to better protect our academic, corporate and personal information. Please ensure you have reviewed this communication before continuing.

MFA adds a second layer of verification when you are logging into a TWU app or system. Our goal is to roll this out with minimal disruption; however, it will require you to form some new habits as part of your digital routine.

How will this affect me?

Many applications at TWU utilize TWU account/email address, meaning you have a single username and password that signs you on to many applications. Some examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Moodle
  • Campus Portal (previously known as Student Portal)
  • Zoom

When you sign on to applications that utilize your TWU account, you may be prompted to enter an MFA code after entering your password. The exact frequency that MFA is triggered depends on multiple factors, including settings configured by IT and automated risk assessments performed by the system. We will ensure that it is configured with a balance between security and convenience.

Where do I see or enter my MFA code?

We recommend downloading the Microsoft Authenticator application to your mobile phone (iOS or Android). This is both the most secure and most convenient method. Please note this does not give TWU the ability to access your personal device. Detailed instructions will be provided as we get closer to the go-live date.

When is the go-live date?

We plan to roll out in phases starting August 26. Training guides and materials can be found in our MFA Knowledge Base and will be provided 1-2 weeks in advance of this date.

Who can I contact with questions or feedback?

If you have any questions regarding MFA, you can contact the Service Hub.
