What is the role of the Centre for Calling & Career Development at TWU?
The Role of the Career Coach

You can book a career coaching appointment at any point in your degree — whether you're exploring direction early on, preparing applications as graduation approaches, or working to build your professional network. There is something useful a coach can offer you at every stage.

Career coaching appointments typically fall into one of three areas, depending on what you need most right now.

Exploration: You're curious about what's out there — different fields, industries, roles — and trying to understand what might be a good fit. These conversations help you explore your values, interests, and what the labour market actually looks like, so you can test possibilities with real information rather than assumptions.

Career readiness: You're preparing to launch — working through application documents, clarifying how to communicate your story, or thinking through what experiences you still want to gain before graduation. These conversations focus on the practical elements that help you move forward with confidence.

Connections: You're ready to build your network but unsure how to start. These conversations cover how to use LinkedIn effectively, identify people worth connecting with, craft thoughtful outreach, and access the relationships and resources TWU offers you as a student.

Don't overlook the people around you

While career coaching is a great resource, we always encourage you to take advantage of the people you are already connected with. Professors, academic advisors, peers, and mentors are all valuable sources of guidance and perspective. The people closest to your experience often notice things about you that you cannot see yourself — and a conversation with someone who knows you well can be just as valuable as a formal appointment.

Making the most of your time

When you book, you'll receive prework questions tailored to whichever area you're focusing on. These questions aren't busywork — they help you clarify what you actually need, and they give your coach context going in so you both can make the most of your time together.

Support That Extends Beyond Graduation

Career development does not end at graduation. Early alumni continue to have access to CCCD support as they navigate their first roles, make early career decisions, and adjust to new professional environments. Graduates also leave with a framework they can continue using — helping them reflect on their direction, adapt to change, and make thoughtful career decisions over time.

The goal

TWU seeks to graduate students who are equipped for life. This means graduates who can articulate who they are and what they offer, and take meaningful next steps forward.
