Meet Our Coaches

Brian Thomson (Richmond)

Brian studied history in UBC and graduated with a master's in humanities in TWU. Despite the sound of his name, Brian was born and raised in Chile; in fact, English was his second language. Nevertheless, his strong penchant for teaching and precise language has helped many an MBA and MA Lead student navigate the intricacies of grammar, syntax, and citation styles. He also coached students from a variety of different disciplines the Writing Centre for two years. Brian's expertise, however, lies in writing well in an academic context, which is more than knowing how to write in correct English. His favorite sessions are the ones where here guides students in brainstorming good research ideas, designing thoughtful essay structures, and crafting persuasive arguments with original insights. In his free time, Brian enjoys playing music with his band, discussing the pressing problems of modernity, and expounding on fictional lore and mythology

Tracy Nnanwubar (Langley)

Bachelor of Arts in English Language
Graduate Diploma in Business and Entrepreneurial Management
Master of Arts in English Literature
Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Ph.D. in Writing (In view)

Educational Philosophy: Based on my TESOL research experience, I see that there are underlying proficiency models between a student’s first language and the English language. This presents critical thinking skills that can be leveraged to produce better academic writing. When students work with me, I will implement a progressive learning system to scaffold their writing in all their assignments, and they can benefit from a healthy attachment model to learning.
