Overview of On-campus Work

TWU students who are enrolled full-time are eligible to work any number of hours on any campus where their program is based, without needing a work permit. You must meet the below requirements to see if you are eligible. It is important to note that you can only start working in Canada when you start your academic program. You cannot work before your studies begin.

Make sure you are eligible to work on campus

You can work on campus starting on the first day you begin studies at TWU if you meet all of the following requirements:

You have a valid study permit, or you have applied to extend your study permit and have maintained status.
You are enrolled full-time for immigration purposes during academic terms or are eligible to work during a scheduled break.
Your study permit includes conditions allowing you to work on campus such as, “May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria, per paragraph R186(f), (v), or (w) and must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria”.
You have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN), or you had a SIN and are on maintained status.

How many hours can I work on campus per week?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not limit the number of hours you can work on campus.

You can work unlimited hours on campus during regular academic terms.

You can work unlimited hours on campus during your program’s scheduled breaks if you’re enrolled full-time in the academic terms immediately before and after your scheduled break. For example, if you are enrolled full-time in September term and will enroll full-time in the following term, you can work unlimited hours on campus during the winter break. If you are not full-time in the terms before or after your scheduled break, you cannot work during the scheduled break.

You are permitted to work full-time on or off campus during a scheduled break for a total of 180 days per calendar year, but not more than 150 consecutive days.

You cannot work full-time on campus during a scheduled break for more than 150 consecutive days, and cannot exceed a total of 180 days per calendar year.

When can I start working on campus?

You cannot start working until you’ve begun full-time studies at TWU - starting from the first day of the term in which you are enrolled, according to the Academic Calendar.

When must I stop working on campus?

You must stop working immediately if you no longer meet the above requirements. For example, do not continue working if your study permit expires and you did not apply to extend it.

If you are no longer enrolled full-time and take time away from your studies, you are not allowed to work and cannot work during the scheduled breaks before or after your break.

If you are an undergraduate student and withdraw from courses to a part-time course load, you must stop working right away, and cannot work during the scheduled breaks before or after you are enrolled part-time.

If you meet the above on-campus working eligibility, you can work under your study permit until the date when you complete your program. You must stop working after the date when you complete your program, even your study permit is still valid. Check Important TWU definitions to learn how to find your program completion date at TWU.
