Groups vs Channels, What's the Difference?

Groups and channels are used within Microsoft Stream to organize videos.

Groups

  • Videos that are added to an MS Stream group are available only to members of that group (unless specified within the video permission settings).
  • You can also create your own private groups and invite members to join.
  • Videos can be added to more than one group.

Channels

  • Unlike groups (Which control who can see videos), channels are intended to help organize videos.
  • Channels can be private (within a group) or company-wide (available to the entire university).

  • An owner can change video permissions at any time.
  • A video can be assigned to multiple owners, groups or channels.
  • Only owners can download a video.

  • Click on the 'pencil' icon to the right of the video you wish to change permissions for.

  • If you wish to add an individual you can search for people in the search box.
  • Under the 'Permissions' tab you can check or uncheck who can control (Owner) or view (Display) your video.

  • If you wish to add a group or channel, select it from drop down menu first, then search for the group or channel. You can then check or uncheck which group or channel can control (Owner) or view (Display) your video.
