Microsoft Stream Classic - Instructor's Guide (ARCHIVE)

Note: Microsoft is retiring Stream Classic and moving to Stream (on SharePoint). Please see this TWU article for the new Stream on SharePoint version.

TWU has provided access to Microsoft Stream, which is like our very own YouTube, but accessible only to members of the TWU community. You can click/tap to a topic of interest below or keep scrolling down to view the entire guide.

Groups vs Channels, What's the Difference?

Groups and channels are used within Microsoft Stream to organize videos.

Groups

  • Videos that are added to an MS Stream group are available only to members of that group (unless specified within the video permission settings).
  • You can also create your own private groups and invite members to join.
  • Videos can be added to more than one group.

Channels

  • Unlike groups (Which control who can see videos), channels are intended to help organize videos.
  • Channels can be private (within a group) or company-wide (available to the entire university).

Creating a Channel

Creating a channel within a group will enable you automatically share videos to Moodle. If you wish to embed more than a single video at a time, you will need to create a channel. Learn more about groups and channels.

Create a Channel

  • Click 'Channels' in the group, then 'Create a new channel'.

Important: Click Membership to ensure your class list is accurate.

Warning: If you have already created a companywide channel in Stream, unfortunately, there is no way to make it private. You will have to delete the original channel and follow the instructions below to create a new one connected to your group. Deleting the channel will NOT delete the videos within the channel, but it might change the privacy of the video.

  • You can also click 'Create a channel' on the splash page.

Enter the channel details.

  • Give your channel a descriptive name, likely one that matches your course, and an optional description.
  • Keep the channel access limited to your course group.
  • Upload a picture of your cat
  • Click 'Create'.

Video Permissions

Permissions

Video permissions allow a video owner to control who has permission to view a video or control access to it.

  • An owner can change video permissions at any time.
  • A video can be assigned to multiple owners, groups or channels.
  • Only owners can download a video.

Adding/Removing Permissions

  • Under the 'My content' tab click on an option to begin searching for the video you want to change permissions for. If you recently uploaded your video, click 'Videos'.

  • Click on the 'pencil' icon to the right of the video you wish to change permissions for.

  • If you wish to add an individual you can search for people in the search box.
  • Under the 'Permissions' tab you can check or uncheck who can control (Owner) or view (Display) your video.

  • If you wish to add a group or channel, select it from drop down menu first, then search for the group or channel. You can then check or uncheck which group or channel can control (Owner) or view (Display) your video.
