STEP 3: Building and Room Selection (Optional)

Summary

A Step by step guide on how to select your room

Body

This is the last step before move in!

If you didn't yet select a roommate and you would like to select a roommate, please complete the roommate step prior to selecting a building/room. View our Roommate Request article for more information

Building/Room Selection is optional - if you don't select a building/room, Housing will manually place you in an empty spot and email you with where you have been placed. Note that there are no change requests until 1 week after move in. If you have a preference of what building, or what style of room you would like - we suggest you pick your own room!

The Lottery

Everyone has a different room selection time. Your room selection time is assigned based on a random lottery number that you are given when you complete your Housing Application. The earliest time assigned is the lottery number closest to the number 1

Everyone that applies is given a room selection time interval of 30 minutes. You can select your room starting at that time, then after 30 minutes, another person will have the opportunity to pick a room. This does not mean that you ONLY have 30 minutes to select your room, it means that the longer you take to select your room, the less opportunity you have to select the rooms you want because every 30 minutes another person / group has the chance to pick a room.

If you have the lottery number in your group that is closest to the number 1 - you will be picking the room for the entire group. Only one person from the entire group has to select a room. Please make sure you and  your roommates already have had the discussion of what room you would like - or plan to all be together during your room selection time so that everyone can work as a group and pick the one that suits everyone best.

Things to Know BEFORE  You Pick a Room
  • Before you select a room, make sure that you don't have any pending roommate requests. If you select a room with pending roommate requests, the pending requests will be cancelled and any empty room slots will be available for other students to select.
  • If you have a hold on your account, you will not be able to select a room. You will need to go to the Service Hub to resolve your hold.
Selecting a Room
You will know when your room selection time opens up through your Housing Checklist on the Campus Portal.

When the link becomes available - click on "Click here to choose a room."

Select the session that you are selecting a room for and review the warnings. When you are done reviewing, click on "Browse Rooms"

The room selection tool allows you to search for a specific building, pick a room, filter through max capacity, show only the remaining room slots etc. You can also click on the room name to see more details about the room. There will be a photo of what the room could potentially look like - while it may not be the EXACT room - it shows a basic layout of the room.

You can also see the "Remaining room slots" to see how many people have already selected that space.

Once you select a room, you will receive a confirmation message:

If you confirm your selection, there are no changes made until one week AFTER you move in. This is your room that you will be moving into for the next semester, so be absolutely sure that this is the room you want.

After confirming your selection, you are ready for move in!

Keep an eye on the Housing Dates and Deadlines Article for when your move in date is.

If you are new to Housing - I suggest you keep an eye on the New to TWU website which will guide you through all the steps you need to take prior to moving onto campus.

If you have any issues regarding Room Selection - please file a ticket with Housing and we will be happy to help!
