Overview of Co-op or Internship Work

A co-op work permit allows you to work full-time during academic terms if your work is required for your program and this work is approved by your program. You are typically enrolled in a co-op term, internship, or practicum course.

You do not require a work permit to work on and off campus during studies for non-co-op employment, if you meet the specific work requirements.

If you are uncertain whether your work is required for your academic program, please reach out to your Program Coordinator or Academic Advisor.

Important update regarding Co-op Work Permit Changes for International Students

As of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a co-op work permit to participate in a required student work placement, such as a co-op, internship, or practicum. To be eligible, you must have a valid study permit (or have applied to extend it before it expired) with a study permit condition allowing you to work on campus.  Check On-campus work to learn how to meet on-campus working eligibility.

If your study permit does not include the required work condition or if your placement requires a medical exam (such as in a health care, childcare, primary or secondary school setting) and you have questions about how to address these immigration-related situations, please consult with a licensed immigration consultant before you begin working in Canada. If you have already applied for a co-op work permit, IRCC will withdraw the application on your behalf.
